Barclay Goodrow claimed by Sharks as Rangers cancel contract

Barclay Goodrow’s ten-year NHL career is almost complete.

The two-time Stanley Cup winner, who the Rangers waived on Tuesday in an effort to create cap space, was claimed on Wednesday by the team that gave him his first NHL contract, the Sharks, as part of a pre-arranged deal with San Jose , as first reported by The Post.

Mike Grier, the Rangers’ former hockey operations consultant, became Sharks general manager, and San Jose will now take over the remaining three years of Goodrow’s contract.

The Rangers waived Goodrow on Tuesday.

Goodrow, who went undrafted, signed with the Sharks in March 2014 after five seasons in the Ontario Hockey League.

He bounced between the NHL and AHL for his first few seasons, but then played parts of six seasons with San Jose while also dealing with injuries.

The reunion makes sense for the Sharks, who could use some veteran leadership during this rebuild.

San Jose is also in a position to acquire Goodrow’s contract as they look to take steps this season that will help them reach the $65 million cap hit in 2024-2025.

Goodrow gets to keep his $3,641,667 per year deal and return to a familiar place.

Rangers president and general manager Chris Drury is apparently unhappy with the club’s rebound from its second conference loss in three years.

As good as Goodrow was in the play-offs, with six goals and two assists in 16 games, the 31-year-old struggled to score during the regular season.

Goodrow, who has served as alternate captain since signing with the Rangers in 2021, has helped instill a winning approach and attitude in the Blueshirts’ locker room, in addition to playing a niche role that doesn’t always get the credit that it deserves.

In 241 games with the Rangers, Goodrow finished with 28 goals and 48 assists.
