Breaking debuted on the Paris 2024 Olympic Games on Friday, and one B-girl went viral on social media for her performance — but not in the way she probably hoped.

Australian Rachel Gunn, who competes under the name “RayGun”, became an instant “meme” on X after her stunning performance in the round-robin stage of the Breaking competition for women.

Gunn, 36, could not match the level of her opponents and was defeated in all her fights without scoring a single point.

“I would never beat these girls at what they do best — their power moves,” Gunn said afterward. “What I bring is creativity.”

But it was her “creativity” that left viewers wondering how she qualified.

“I feel a little sorry for RayGun the Aussie (breaker) — but that routine was hilariously ridiculous,” wrote someone on X. “This kind of thing happens all the time at the Olympics.”

According to her Olympian biography, Gunn is a senior lecturer at Macquarie University with a Ph.D. in cultural studies. “Dance” is listed as one of her research interests.

Gunn qualified for the Paris Olympics after winning the QMS Oceania Championships in Sydney, Australia. In 2020 and 2021, she was named best b-girl by the Australian Breaking Association.

Gunn also received criticism online for her style choice.

According to the New York Post, The International Olympic Committee allowed competitors to wear their own uniforms, which had to be turned in before the competition. Gunn was the only athlete to wear a tracksuit representing her country.

“I can’t wait to be looked at in the same way tomorrow what the boys are wearing,” she commented on her Instagram on Friday.

The men’s competition started on Saturday.
