Angel Gomes: Midfielder set for England debut via Man Utd, Mourinho and France

Lee Carsley’s first squad as interim England manager featured a number of surprise players, with 23-year-old midfielder Angel Gomes being the most surprising.

The London-born former Manchester United youth player has just 46 minutes of Premier League experience but has enjoyed a successful career with French Ligue 1 side Lille, helping them qualify for this season’s Champions League.

He has represented England at all age levels, from under-16 to under-21, and made his debut for the Three Lions in England’s Nations League win over Finland on Tuesday, and was on the bench in Saturday’s win over Ireland.

Gomes, the godson of former Man Utd and Portugal winger Nani, impressed alongside Declan Rice, making more touches (130) and more passes (116) than any other player.

Manager Lee Carsley said: “He’s a great person. He’s passionate about football. He’s interested in tactics. He knows all the players in every league.

“When you ask for feedback, you have to be prepared for him to give you feedback about the session, about how we are going to structure it or about the positions.

“He deserves it completely. The performance you saw today is something we’ve seen over the last three or four years.”

BBC Sport has examined his career so far, including a tough reign from Jose Mourinho and a dramatic departure from United before flourishing in France.
