5 New Top Movies to Stream on Netflix, Max, and More (September 3-9)

Netflix subscribers can look forward to a few new additions to the service’s film library, including the action thriller “Rebel Ridge.” The highlight of the new films, at least in this writer’s opinion, however, is “The Boy and the Heron” on Max. The latest film from legendary animation house Studio Ghibli and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, is a sublime adventure tale that combines spectacular visuals with an epic, heartfelt story.

‘Imaginary’ (Starz)

Imaginary creatures coming to life with grisly results is a well-worn terror in the horror genre, so the central concept of “Imaginary” can hardly be called original. Still, this trashy supernatural chiller has some fun with the idea of an imaginary friend who turns out to be much more than a figment of your imagination. The third act in particular goes completely off the rails in an extremely silly way, but the madness is somewhat fun if you can turn your brain off.

Jessica (DeWanda Wise) has just moved back into her childhood home with her husband (Tom Payne) and two stepchildren. When the youngest, Alice (Pyper Braun), finds a teddy bear and names him Chauncey, Jessica has a strange feeling that something is wrong. And in classic horror film tradition, her hunch is quickly proven correct when Alice begins to misbehave and Chauncey proves to be much more than a toy.

Rachel Sennott helms this comedy-drama from writer/director Ally Pankiw that enjoyed a strong reception when it premiered at South by Southwest in March. After a stint on premium video-on-demand services, it’s now set to make its Netflix debut, and it’s looking all but guaranteed to be a true hidden gem in the streaming service’s massive library of content.

In “I Used to be Funny,” Sennott plays Sam, a former nanny and wannabe stand-up comedian struggling with intense PTSD. Through a series of flashbacks, we learn that Sam had previously formed a close bond with a young girl in her care, Brooke (Olga Petsa), but in the present, that relationship has fractured. When Brooke disappears, Sam is torn between holding on to her past grudges and helping in the search.

Director Hayao Miyazaki returns with “The Boy and the Heron,” an animated fantasy reminiscent of the filmmaker’s previous work, “Spirited Away.” That’s no bad thing, and “The Boy and the Heron” is similarly excellent, combining fantastical elements with a very human story. Between the stunning Studio Ghibli visuals, emotionally charged story, and remarkable thematic depth, “The Boy and the Heron” is one of Miyazaki’s very best.

Mahito (voiced by Luca Padovan in the English version) is a young boy who recently lost his mother in a tragic fire. When his father remarries and moves to an estate outside of Tokyo, Mahito struggles to settle into his new place, but an encounter with a talking heron (Robert Pattinson) gives him new purpose as he learns of another world where his mother still lives. And so begins a fantastic adventure to this new land filled with strange creatures and memorable characters.

Without any prior reviews or a chance to see it myself, I can’t yet comment on the ultimate quality of “Rebel Ridge.” If the trailer is any indication, though, this Netflix thriller looks to be a ton of adrenaline-fueled fun, and I’m confident it will go down well with the service’s action-hungry subscribers. It has a very good shot at cracking the Top 10 list, and could even reach the #1 spot.

Terry Richmond (Aaron Pierre) arrives in the small town of Shelby Springs with one goal: post bail for his nephew, but when the money he needs is seized by the corrupt local police, led by Chief Sandy Burnne (Don Johnson), all hell breaks loose. Not one to sit idly by and watch this injustice, Terry uses his deadly skills to wage war against the town’s controlling powers to get his money back, no matter the cost.

“The Good Half” is a tender drama film that features former Disney heartthrob Nick Jonas in a rare leading role. Directed by Robert Schwartzman, the youngest member of the Jonas Brothers clan plays Reen Wheeland, a troubled man who returns to Cleveland, Ohio after the death of his mother.

Back on his old stomping grounds, he’s tasked with healing old family ties while also forging new friendships (and maybe even finding a little romance). This homecoming is also a chance for him to confront his personal issues and process his grief. The film also stars Alexandra Shipp, Brittany Snow, David Arquette and Matt Walsh. Critics were mixed about “The Good Half,” but Jonas fans, or anyone who enjoys a tearful drama, might want to give it a shot.
