3 steps for more energy

IIf you could look up the phrase “book and busy” in the dictionary, you’d probably find a (stunning) photo of model and entrepreneur Karlie Kloss smiling back at you. Between running Kode With Klossy, a nonprofit that provides free coding classes to teenage girls, and the Gateway Coalition, a collective that helps Midwest doctors provide health care to women, it’s safe to say that the 40-times Fashion covergirl is *always* on-the-go. Oh, and did we mention she’s also a mom of two?! The ultimate Karlie Kloss morning routine must be the secret to her boundless energy.

To find out, Well+Good caught up with Kloss in an exclusive interview, where we picked her brain about how she maintains her energy while wearing so many hats. She tells us that her goal is to be the best version of herself and feel good from the inside out. That’s why she’s partnered with vitamin and supplement company Thorne for their Find Your Way campaign, a movement all about optimizing health and wellness at every stage of life.

Read on to learn more about Kloss’s morning routine, which includes sleep, breakfast, supplements, and other non-negotiables.

Actually, it all starts with her nighttime routine

We know what you’re thinking: This should be about Karlie Kloss’s morning routine! But it turns out that the key to an energetic morning and day starts with how we prepare the night before. For Kloss, her evening routine is just as important as her morning routine, especially since her daylight hours are filled to the brim.

“I’ve always been a huge advocate of sleep as an important wellness habit because it’s essential for your brain to function optimally,” Kloss says. “Sleep is one of the most important parts of my routine, so I make sure I get my rest no matter what.”

The best way to feel rested, she says, is to go to bed as early as possible. Since she lives in NYC, aka the city that never sleeps, Kloss makes it a priority to put her phone on “do not disturb” and avoids checking emails, doomscrolling on social media, or watching the news before bed. To help her sleep after a busy day, Kloss turns to a magnesium supplement to relax her muscles and promote a good night’s sleep. Lately, she’s been loving Thorne’s magnesium bisglycinate.

Kloss’s 3-Step Morning Routine

How you start your morning can often set the tone for your energy levels throughout the day. “I try to start my morning off right, because I never know what’s going to happen during the day,” Kloss tells us. Here’s what her typical energetic morning looks like:

1. She does a workout or meditation before the kids wake up

Life has always been busy for Kloss, but it’s gotten even busier since having boys Levi (born March 2021) and Elijah (born July 2023). That’s why she’s been taking advantage of the hours before her little ones wake up to carve out time for exercise and self-care. “If I can just get a quick workout in the morning before my day starts, or if I can just meditate for five minutes and just feel good in my body, I try to make that a priority,” she tells us. (Both meditation and exercise should be part of a longevity-boosting morning routine, by the way.)

Kloss enjoys taking a Pilates class or working out with her trainer Madison Rose, the founder of The Studio. When she travels across time zones, she uses Rose’s on-demand lessons, which are easily accessible even in different time zones and cramped hotel rooms.

2. She prepares a high-protein breakfast

Kloss tells us that she’s been trying to eat more protein these days (don’t we all want that?). Since she doesn’t eat meat, protein smoothies are a welcome way to hit her macro goals, especially when she’s traveling. If she has access to a blender, she loves to make a protein smoothie with Thorne Protein Powderwhich she mixes with “anything she gets inspired by,” Kloss says.

We recommend adding a scoop of high-quality protein powder, a source of fiber (like fruit), a handful of leafy greens (for micronutrients), and some healthy fats (like peanut butter or almond butter). This will give you a balanced morning shake that will keep you full and energized all morning long.

3. She takes her supplements

Kloss is all about streamlining and making the parts of her life that she can more efficiently, and that’s where supplements come in. On Sunday, before her work week starts, she sets out her pillbox with all the supplements she takes so she doesn’t have to think about them all week. This can save time (and energy) for other morning tasks, like taking care of the kids or getting ready for the day.

Here’s a look at what’s in her pillbox:

  • A B-complex for energy
  • Vitamin C for antioxidants and immune support
  • from Thorne Memoractive supplements for brain function and for when she’s feeling extra drained (the main ingredient is ashwagandha, to promote relaxation and anxiety reduction)
  • from Thorne PharmaceuticalGABA (or another third-party tested GABA supplement) for stress support
TIP

Supplements are not for everyone. Talk to your doctor before taking a new supplement to make sure it is safe for you based on your health and any other medications you are taking.

Her biggest tip? Prioritize your personal well-being

“My biggest tip is to make sure you prioritize your own health and well-being and make time for it,” says Kloss.

For her, that means prioritizing a good night’s sleep, making time for self-care, and enlisting a little help from supplements to keep her energy levels up to par as she navigates her role as a mother, entrepreneur, and busy boss in general.
